Should I book roaming entertainment or a show?

Roaming Entertainment is great for events where you wish our performers to walk about, interacting with people individually, or in small groups. Your guests will personally experience the entertainment close up. It is fantastic background entertainment which creates a great vibe at any event. It is not suitable for events where you wish all your guests to be focused on the entertainment at the same time.

Shows are perfect for events where you wish all the focus to be on the entertainment. Most of our shows are interactive and involve audience participation. As they are performed for everyone at the same time, everyone gets to 'share the joke', marvel at the magic or be dazzled by the breathtaking juggling. Thus creating a unique shared experience, which will have them talking for years to come.

Background fire performers and face painters don't really fit into either of the above categories as these types of entertainment need to set up in a fixed position. However, please note that although background fire is in a static position it is not a show.

How much space will I need?

This depends on the type of entertainment that you choose to book. Most roaming performers only require the same amount of space that an ordinary guest would need to move about your event. However, some performers and shows do need a specific amount of space.

If the venue is deemed unsuitable by Big Top Entertainment or it's performers, for any reason whatsoever, it is the client's responsibility to provide a suitable alternative venue. If a suitable alternative venue is not provided then the fee will remain payable in full.

Listed below are details of the types of entertainment that require a specific amount of space.

Stilt Walkers require a minimum ceiling height of 3m. They also require enough space to walk between tables etc. However, they only require just a bit more room than an ordinary sized person.

Unicyclists require a minimum ceiling height of 3m. They also need plenty of room to ride about, so they are not really suited to moving between tables, for example at a wedding reception dinner.

Background fire performers require a fixed performance space of 3m x 3m per performer, with 3m ceiling clearance. Please note that we only perform fire at OUTDOOR events. We do not perform fire indoors, or underneath tents / marquees etc. Fire performance areas must be well away from flammable items such as table cloths, draping, curtains etc. Please read our Fire performance technical requirements

The Comedy Magic Variety Show & Magical Circus Variety Show requires a minimum of 3m x 2m clear performance space. If you would like unicycling to be performed, then we also require a minimum of 3m ceiling clearance. A high ceiling will also help with the juggling part of this show, although our performers can adapt the juggling to fit in to rooms with a lower ceiling.

Fire show:

Nova, the 1 man Fire Show 3m x 3m clear performance space, plus a minimum 3m vertical clearance. If  you wish to include fire breathing in the Nova show, unlimited vertical clearance will be required.

Fire performance technical requirements

Please note that we only perform fire at OUTDOOR events. We do not perform fire indoors, or underneath tents / marquees etc. Fire performance areas must be well away from flammable items such as table cloths, draping, curtains etc.

'Aurora' the electric glow juggling show has very specific requirements. Please view the full space and technical requirements for 'Aurora'

Games (kids' parties) As our games involve lots of running around, we require a large, flat, unobstructed space, on GRASS, measuring a minimum of 10m x 5m. We do not play our games on hard surfaces. We do not play games in the same hall as a formal / sit down dinner. For larger parties more space may be required.

Do you provide sound / PA systems?

We DO NOT provide PA systems for events.

Our show performers have very small portable sound systems and these are NOT suitable for larger / corporate events. If you book a show, please ensure that you provide your own a PA system, which is suitable for the size of your event.

For variety shows and Nova fire show, our performer will need to plug a headset microphone receiver into your PA system. For Nova our performer will also need to plug an MP3 player into your PA system. Please view the  full technical requirements for 'Aurora' and the Fire performance technical requirements.

Why don't you have all your prices on this website?

The reason that we don't list all of the prices on our website is because we have to include transport costs in our rates, and these vary depending on the location of the venue.

Also, for events taking place far away from Durban, or events outside of Durban that finish very late, we may also need to factor in accommodation costs for the performers.

Also, multiple bookings may qualify for discounted rates.

Most of our Little Top Parties are booked within our central pricing zone, so we have included these price lists to help busy mums and dads. You can find links to these price lists here and make fill out our online booking / enquiry form here.

If you would like us to send you the correct information and prices, please visit the contact us page.

What happens if it rains at my outdoor event?

Unfortunately, as our performers use specialised equipment and props, which can be damaged by water, in most cases it is simply not possible for them to perform in the rain. For outdoor functions, you need to have a back up wet weather plan in place. If a suitable alternative venue cannot be provided, then our fee will remain payable in full, even if our entertainers are unable to perform at your event. However, please be assured that we will do our very best to carry on if it is at all possible.

In the case of fire performance our entertainers are able to perform in very light rain.

Please also note that we are only able to perform electric glow juggling, when the venue is completely dry, as any moisture can seriously damage the equipment.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes, all bookings require a minimum 50%* non-refundable deposit to be paid. This is the only way to make a confirmed booking.

Last minute bookings will require 100% advanced payment in order to secure entertainment. Please note that our electric glow juggling show 'Aurora' always requires 100% advance payment.

*Some large / out of town bookings may also require 100% advance payment, especially if we need to book and pay for our accommodation costs in advance.

To confirm your booking, this deposit must be paid to us within 2 working days of the invoice date. After this time has elapsed, we may not be able to guarantee performers for your event. This is because our performers are highly sought after, with many clients wishing to book the same time slots. We cannot ask our performers to hold slots open indefinitely without a deposit.

What happens if I want to cancel my booking?

Cancellations (of all or part of the booking) must be made at least 7 days* in advance or will be subject to 100% payment for products and services booked.

* Please note that some of some large, or out of town bookings, may require cancellations (of all or part of the booking) to be made 30 days in advance, or the booking will be subject to 100% payment for products and services booked. This is especially the case when we have booked and paid for accommodation in advance.  If a 30 day cancellation period is required for your booking, we will notify you in writing at the time your booking is requested.

Please note that ALL deposits are non-refundable in the event of a cancellation.

Please note that date change requests will be treated as cancellations and will be subject to the above cancellation fees.

If my event is delayed, will your performer wait around and perform at a later time?

If your event is delayed, for any reason whatsoever, our performers will endeavour to accommodate your booking. However, please note that our performers usually have multiple events booked for different times on the same date. If your delay results in our entertainer(s) not performing at your event, due to leaving to attend another commitment, we will treat this as a client cancellation and the fee will remain payable in full.

Will my performer take a break during the entertainment?

Yes. Performing entertainment can be physically strenuous. To ensure our performers provide you with quality entertainment, and to prevent injuries, our roaming performers & face painters will take a 10 min break for every hour they are booked.

For example, if you have booked a stilt walker from 12pm - 6pm, they will take a 1 hour break within that time period.

Please also note that if you have booked 1 artist to perform different types of entertainment at your event (e.g. a show and roaming), they will also need a break between these slots, in order to prepare.

Will the performer act as a childminder at my event?

Unfortunately, our performers are not able to act as childminders and unattended children may not be left with our entertainers. Parents and carers are responsible for their children at all times.
